Back in January, VW boss Herbert Diess shared the concept of an electric retro VW bus- it not only looked extremely futuristic but it had everything going on ‘under the bonnet’ as well. From wishful thinking to reality, this summer Diess has confirmed that the 1950s VW inspired ‘VW I.D Buzz microbus’ is due to launch in 2022 (as announced at the concept’s debut at the ‘Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance’.
As if the 1950s VW isn’t still considered to be the most ‘far out’ mini bus money can buy, this high technology bus has everything to be excited about too; from 369bhp to augmented reality dashboards with added ‘swipe-gesture’ feature for opening the doors- this vehicle is totally equipped for the future.
The car even has auto-pilot! That’s right. Select ‘I.D Pilot mode’ and not only will the car drive itself, but the drivers seat will automatically swivel 180 degrees for you to socialise with the rest of the cabin, while the car takes over your journey.
Oh, and don’t forget to pick up the portable car tablet when you do, this allows you to control the rest of the cars functions, such as the awesome augmented reality displays.
The car will have a choice of rear or all-wheel drive. 369bhp with claims to reach 0-62mph in 5 seconds with a top speed of 100mph – plus an NEDC-rated driving range of up to 373 miles. It also features inductive charging tech, giving an 80 per cent battery (lithium-ion) boost in 30 minutes (more specs at the bottom of this article).
The overall architecture has been well thought out. As well as traveling in an obviously highly equipped technology pod, the lounge-like interior all have adjustable seating positions as well- so you can tailor this very well to suit your needs.
The design has also allowed for the battery pack and motors to sit beneath the floor allowing for two luggage compartments in the front and rear- nice accessible spaces! Having the ‘muscle’ in the middle of the vehicle also lends itself to lowering the car’s centre of gravity.
Check out this video to see it in action.
Although this is not officially confirmed, we have read that this minivan could be the figurehead for Volkswagen’s upcoming Uber rival, MOIA ( a ride-sharing company set to launch in 2020 ) – which would be a no brainer really!
